Apex Book Company acquires science fiction crime novel COIL by Ren Warom

Apex is pleased to announce the acquisition of Ren Warom's dark crime science fiction novel COIL. It's a thrilling futuristic crime story unlike anything we've read.

Perfect for Apex.

COIL is slated to be released in mid to late 2019. We can't wait to share it with you!

You can find more about Ren Warom and her other works at her website.

Thank You from Apex for helping Brian Keene

In early June, we ran a promotion to help Brian Keene after his burn injuries. All proceeds of sales of The Lost Level and Return to the Lost Level would go toward his medical care.

Thanks to the kindness of our readers, we are able to mail a nice check of $100 to Brian today. Brian, like most freelance writers in the United States, cannot afford healthcare. So every dollar we can send him is a big help.

You can still help Brian by buying his books. He's a prolific guy and has dozens of fantastic works across a wide range of genres.

Here's a good place to start: Amazon.

Brian also has a Patreon you can support here.

And, Brian, if you're reading this...I *might* be able to give you a few extra weeks to finish that next book for Apex. ;)

Raising Funds for Brian Keene

By Jason Sizemore

On June 5th, 2018, Brian Keene was badly burned in a brush fire accident.

As a freelance writer, Brian does not have health insurance. His medical costs are estimated to be north of $300,000. He has months of recovery ahead of him and during this time, he will be unable to write or do other work.

Brian is a longtime advocate for writers. He's an Iraq War veteran. And Brian is a philanthropist who works many, many hours with the Scares That Care charity to raise money annually for breast cancer patients, burn victims, and childhood illness.

Apex wants to extend a little help to a guy who has spent so much of his life in service of others.

Brian's friends have setup a GoFundMe page here. If you can spare a few dollars, please do so.

And through the end of June, all proceeds of all Apex direct (meaning books sold through our website) eBook sales of Brian's two solo novel with Apex Book Company, The Lost Level and Return to the Lost Level, will go directly to Brian.

The Lost Level ($4.99): https://www.apexbookcompany.com/products/the-lost-level?variant=1037192101

Return to the Lost Level ($4.99): https://www.apexbookcompany.com/collections/all-books/products/return-to-the-lost-level?variant=3293482975258

We don't expect to raise the $300,000 ourselves. But every dollar matters for Brian and his family.

Apex Publications seeks part-time marketing specialist

By Jason Sizemore
on May 15, 2018

THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST

We are looking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic part-time Marketing Specialist to help us in our overall online marketing efforts. You will be an integral part of the Apex Publications development and production team by helping our brand and titles reach readers interested in science fiction, fantasy, and horror.

Marketing a small press is a unique challenge. It’s a marketing sector with specialized needs, principles, and tactics. What works for a Big Five publisher might not work for a small press. Apex loves the relationship it has with its readers, and we want a marketer who understands this relationship. Combined, these considerations will make the position more interesting and provide different challenges than your typical marketing job.

The goal is to deliver effective marketing programs that will enhance the scope of our brand and promote sales growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Brainstorm and develop ideas for creative marketing campaigns
  • Assist with the execution of promotional events and campaigns (such as book release parties, coffeeklatches, etc.)
  • Plan and execute initiatives to reach our target audience through online channels.
  • Assist in analyzing marketing data (newsletter campaign results, conversion rates, site traffic) to help shape future marketing.
  • Undertake individual tasks of a marketing plan as assigned.
  • Insure our new titles are placed in the hands of the right reviewers.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrate an understanding of genre small press marketing elements (particularly social media and newsletters).
  • Technology competency, including MS Office, Google Docs, Adobe Creative Suite, Web analytics, and Google analytics.
  • Business communication and copy writing skills.

This is a freelance opportunity. We will pay $10 per hour (non-W2) for 20 hours of work a month.

Note: Work will include both Apex Book Company and Apex-Magazine.com.

Are you interested? If so, send a CV and query letter to Jason Sizemore (editor-in-chief of Apex Publications) to the address jason@apexbookcompany.com.

This is an open call until the position is filled. When the position is filled, we will make an announcement on this blog.

Novel Acquisition: Snow Over Utopia by Rudolfo A. Serna

Apex Publications is happy to announce the acquisition of Snow Over Utopia by Rudolfo A. Serna.

Snow Over Utopia is a dark science fiction novel that weaves lyrical prose, a literary sensibility, and satire. Set in a future built on the wreckage of our civilization and environment, the story follows Eden in her quest to find Utopia and to have her sight returned.

From the author:

It is a genre bending short novel of apocalyptic fantasy, sci-fi psychedelia, and doom metal.

In an age of savage science powered by black-mass, and thrown away bio-matter leaked into an underground sea lit by the heart of the great tree. The novel starts with Eden losing her rare blue eyes to fanatical and sadistic slave masters. Escaping with a murderer named Miner, she is found by the Librarian and his daughter, the huntress, Delilah, in a mountain-top sanctuary. Eden must go on through time and space in a necrotronic stream generated be the living computer program called Witch Mother.

Snow Over Utopia is a complex novel that demands the reader piece together the story behind the story. It is a rich, almost addictive read, that left us yearning to go back to the beginning and start Eden's story all over again as soon as we had finished it.

Slated to be released in early 2019, we are thrilled to be bringing Snow Over Utopia to our readers and look forward to the chance to discuss every detail and intricacy of this twisted world.

About the author:

Rudolfo A. Serna was born under the nuclear shadow of Los Alamos National Laboratories and was raised in the orchards, mountains, and fields of northern New Mexico. Occupations have included carpenter, landscaper, wildland firefighter, creative writing coordinator, and adjunct professor. With a penchant for ‘70s horror B-movies, psychedelic doom metal, permaculture, and nature worship, he lives with his wife and daughter in Albuquerque, NM, writing dark fantasy sci-fi. His short stories can be seen with Brick Moon Fiction, Bewildering Stories, Aphotic Realm, and Augur Magazine. He earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of New Mexico, and serves as the digital steward of the Mutantroot Art Collective at mutantroot.com, or via Twitter at mutantroot1.

The World SF Bundle

By Lesley Conner
on April 05, 2018

The World SF Bundle - Curated by Lavie Tidhar

Over ten years ago I came up with the crazy idea of an anthology collecting speculative fiction stories from around the world. The resultant collection – The Apex Book of World SF – came out in 2009 and has since spawned a series of books, with the fifth volume coming out later this year. Over the course of that decade I encountered some brilliant writers, and was able to watch what had once seemed impossible – overseas writers flourishing in the genre world – come to seem a matter of course.

While translation continues to pose a significant barrier, many new enthusiasts have contributed to surmounting the problem. In this bundle we have a comprehensive anthology of translated Spanish speculative fiction, Castles in Spain, as well as a wonderful novel from Japan, A Small Charred Face, made possible through the Haikasoru imprint dedicated to translated Japanese speculative fiction. In addition, we are offering all four of the current Apex Book of World SF anthologies, in which you may encounter many writers new to you, many of them translated from the original languages.

Yet another solution to the translation problem came with the emergence of new writers proficient in more than one language. Here, for instance, we have the wonderfully atmospheric Servant of the Underworld, the first novel by French author Aliette de Bodard, who writes in English. Russian author Ekaterina Sedia does the same, here with her debut novel The Secret History of Moscow, which is impossible not to devour. Malaysian Zen Cho's debut collection, Spirits Abroad, justly won the Crawford Award, while fellow Malaysian Cassandra Khaw's Rupert Wong: Cannibal Chef is a delightful, bloodied romp through a magical Kuala Lumpur.

I was lucky enough to write the original introduction to Mexican author Silvia Moreno-Garcia's masterful Prime Meridian, a thought-provoking work of science fiction set in Mexico City, already garnering much attention. And I got to originally blurb South African author Nick Wood's Azanian Bridges, an intriguing take on alternate history and Apartheid.

Our chosen charity for this bundle, English PEN, works tirelessly to promote translated works into English, championing literature beyond national and linguistic borders. They provide funding for translation projects, are the founding centre of a worldwide writers' association with 145 centres in more than 100 countries, and are also a founding member of the Free Word Centre. They campaign to defend writers and readers in the UK and around the world whose human right to freedom of expression is at risk. I couldn't think of a better partner for this bundle, and hope you help us support them and their work.

"World SF" as a term has been somewhat nebulous, encompassing a huge range of voices and approaches to the fantastic. Here is what I hope is but the first sampler of some of today's exciting writers working in the field. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. – Lavie Tidhar

The initial titles in the World SF Bundle (minimum $5 to purchase) are:

  • The Secret History of Moscow by Ekaterina Sedia
  • Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard

Cover Reveal: Nexhuman by Francesco Verso

By Lesley Conner
on March 30, 2018

Yesterday was author Francesco Verso's 45th birthday! To help him celebrate such a momentous occasion, we wanted to share the cover for his upcoming Apex title Nexhuman

This striking cover art is the work of artist Luca Cervini, with the title design by Mikio Murikami.

Originally published in Italian in 2013 by Delos Books, Apex will be releasing the English version of Nexhuman in August of this year. This dystopian novel has a focus on post-humanism and we are incredibly excited to add it to the Apex catalog. Reviewer Rachel Cordasco did a write-up for Strange Horizons that you can read here.

"Francesco Verso brings classic cyberpunk attitude to grand romantic obsession . . . a thoughtful meditation on what it means to be human and an exciting peek into a world that is just around the corner." --James Patrick Kelly (Nebula, Locus and Hugo Award winner)

In a future threatened by the spread of "kipple" (garbage & trash) that overruns everything, Peter Payne is part of a fringe society that makes a living scavenging. When his chance to change his fate is violently ripped away by his brother Charlie, Peter embarks on a quest to rebuild the object of his obsession. Exploring themes such as cybernetics, prosthetics, consumerism, robotics and transcendence, Nexhuman expands on classic science fiction to build a world as deep and searching as its main character.

You will not want to miss this stellar book coming soon from Apex!
