For Immediate Release: June 16th, 2026
Lexington, KY:
Apex Book Company is excited to announce the acquisition of Let's Play White, Too by Chesya Burke. Following her trailblazing previous title, Let's Play White, Chesya Burke's Let's Play White, Too will explore the existence of Black women in America, told through the dual perspectives of both horror fiction and real-life experiences via nonfiction essays. Distinctive in that it includes both fantasy and fact, Let's Play White, Too seeks to simultaneously unpack elements of the lived Black experience and portray that experience through short horror fiction.
Blackness in horror throughout history has shown Black people as monstrous and evil. The stories in this collection will subvert this trope, instead placing Blackness at the center of horror while changing our understanding of what is and what can be horror fiction. Within the essays, Burke will examine how the definition of "horror" changes depending on the creators, and their histories.
For Black women, horror is much more than a genre. Let's Play White, Too will show just how frightening that can be.
Dr. Chesya Burke is an Associate Professor of English and U.S. Literatures and the director of Africana Studies at Stetson University. Having written and published over a hundred stories and articles within the genres of horror, science fiction, comics, and Afrofuturism, her academic research focuses primarily on the intersections of race, gender and genre.
Let's Play White, Too is scheduled for release in June 2027 and has distribution through IPG.
