Submissions

Note: We are closed to submissions for our book lines.

Note Redux: Apex Science Fiction and Horror Digest will be closed to submissions from June 1 - June 30th. Any submissions sent during this time will be deleted unread.

Apex Digest wants to be able to increase our writer pay to the SFWA and HWA defined professional rate of 5 cents per word. Writers, we need your help to make this happen. Encourage your fans, friends, and family to help with the cause and take out a subscription!

Ok, the particulars…

1. Payment made on publication.
2. We want dark sci-fi. All stories require a sci-fi element. Most stories we print will be a mix of science fiction and horror, but occasionally we’ll buy an exceptional work of straight sci-fi (see “Allergies” in issue one) or straight dark fantasy (see “Trees of Bone” in issue three).
3. Must be sent electronically in Word DOC or RTF format as an attachment to your email. We no longer accept post mailed submissions, nor will we accept stories in the body of an email.
4. Must be no more than 10,000 words.
5. Double spaced. Please use Courier or Times New Roman as your font. Font point size of 12. Put your last name on each page. In fact, our feelings wouldn’t be hurt if you used http://www.shunn.net/format/story.html as a format reference.
6. Only one submission at a time.
7. Simultaneous submissions are okay.
8. We don’t accept poetry. Flash fiction is ok and will be considered for the Parting Shot. Payment for the Parting Shot is $20. The Parting Shot can be no more than 750 words.
9. Artists need to query our art director, Deb Taber. We pay $20 and one contributor copy for interior illustrations.
10. Query about reprints for Apex Online. Only unpublished work will be considered for Apex Digest.
11. We ask for First North American Serial Rights.
12. If we like your story, we will email and ask if you are willing to let us publish your work. If you agree, then we will either mail or email our standard publication contract. This has to be signed and returned to Apex before we can print your work.
13. We encourage you to report our response time to the Black Hole and Duotrope.

Starting with issue #13, payment for fiction will be 2.5 cents per word. Additionally, you will receive two free contributor copies of the issue in which you appear. And…you will be given props on the Apex website, along with a bio and byline in the magazine.

We will try to answer all submissions within four weeks. Right now, estimated response time is 10-20 days.

Artist Submission Guidelines

1. If you have an online portfolio, simply send a note and a link to your portfolio to our Art Director, Deb Taber. For those without online portfolios, send 4-6 samples in .jpg format.
2. We prefer to work with artists who are able to do both cover and interior illustrations, so please send black & white samples that are appropriate for interiors as well as full color. Remember, we use multiple interior illustrations per issue, but only four covers per year.
3. Artists receive $20 for interior illustrations plus one contributor copy. Cover art pays $100 plus two contributor copies.
4. Note from the Art Director: for right now, I’m asking for a moratorium on comic/graphic novel style artwork. Not that we don’t love it–we do–we just already have a list of regular contributors who do that kind of work, and I’d like to see something different. Should these needs change in the future, this message will self-destruct, so check this space every once in a while if you like.
