This week’s giveaway is Rot by Michele Lee. Rot was published by the folks at Skullvines Press and can be purchased here.
About Rot:
Zombies Can Be Such a Burden
So you’ve raised your loved ones from the dead, but had no idea how difficult it would be to care for them.No problem! Silver Springs is a warm, peaceful facility equipped to handle all your zombie needs. Their friendly staff will ensure they have a safe environment with daily exercise and raw meat.
Rest easy knowing they’re in good hands… as they rot.
In Michele Lee’s Rot, you won’t find an apocalypse or Romero-style flesh-eaters. This is far more disturbing.
In a world where certain people can will others back from death, Silver Springs Specialty Care Community caters to the undead for those who aren’t quite ready to let go (zombie milk available by special arrangement at the home office).
Dean, retired from the military and looking for an easier life, runs security at this zombie herding farm, but he learns that dark injustice is not unique to war. There’s a rotten core to Silver Springs. Now, Dean and a quickly-decaying corpse named Patrick are on the hunt for a woman they both love and lost to a lucrative business that specializes in greed, zombies and never having to say goodbye.

Faith. So much of our reality is determined by what we believe, and it can so easily be... undone.
I’m woefully under-read in the zombie department, and that’s unfortunate, because I have an idea for a zombie story and I’m not sure how to write it.
That said, I think the best zombie story I’ve ever read is Ed Bryant’s “A Sad Last Love at the Diner of the Damned.”
My favorite book of zombie fiction is Skipp & Spector’s “Book of the Dead”. It’s got some of the best horror writers, writing some of the best zombie fiction available.
A close runner up for me is the recent “Autumn” series by David Moody. It’s…different.
I love the really popular stuff, I’ll admit: World War Z, 28 Days Later (but not it’s sequel),etc.
A fantastic, lesser-known short fiction piece was published on Pseudopod early on called the Skull-Faced Boy by David Barr Kirtley (http://pseudopod.org/2008/06/13/pseudopod-94-the-skull-faced-boy/). Definitely worth a download.
As far as zombies go, I have to say Brian Keene’s The Rising is my favorite. It’s difficult to find original works in the zombie genre these days, but if you’re willing to dig a little, there are some real gems out there. The Rising is probably the most original zombie tale I’ve read in a long time and Keene puts a cool twist on where zombie’s come from. It was an excellent read from start to finish and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read it.
Like Dominic said, Skipp and Spector’s Book of the Dead. The only zombie anthology you’ll ever need.
i love anything by michele lee !!!
Hello
I’ve read a lot of zombies literature (why does that sounds so wrong?). I’m always impressed when someone can give it a new twist. This book looks very promising.
Mike Griffiths.
It’s zombie status will probably be contested by some, but seeing as George Romero freely admits to taking his zombies from it: Matheson’s I Am Legend.
Still the best.
Since I’m sure it’d be cheating to say my favorite zombie story is the one I wrote…I think my favorite would be the Halls of the Dead miniseries from The Peacock King.
I think I’ve got to go with The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. Absolutely visceral YA. Very cool.
And as a shout out, I’d like to direct zombie fans to L. D. Silver’s Zombie Girls, a neat little webfiction serial available here: http://zombiegirls.typepad.com/zombie_girls/
Yay zombies!!
I’m not an aficionado of zombie fiction, but I must say that Carrie Ryan’s “The Forest of Hands and Teeth” was one of my favorite reads of 2009. Also had a chance to read Max Brooks’ “World War Z” recently, and was surprised by how inventive and enthralling it was.
Congrats, Scott, you won the drawing for ROT!
Very cool! Thanks a lot!
