Catherine Tobler about her story “Every Winter” and writing. And Russell Dickerson talks with our amazing cover artist Ania Tomicka.

Head over to the Apex Magazine website to read Jason Sizemore’s editorial and E. Catherine Tobler’s story “Every Winter” right now. To catch more of the issue, check back often. We will be releasing new content all month long!

Want to read the entire issue now? Subscribe!

Every month I encourage readers to subscribe if they enjoy Apex Magazine, but this month in particular it is really important. We are currently running our annual subscription drive. Subscriptions are the main way which we keep Apex Magazine funded. They are how we pay our authors, artists, and other contributors. This year we have a goal of raising $10,000. If we reach that goal we will have the funds to increase the word count of each issue and raise the pay rate at which we pay our authors. We are also planning an amazing issue full of bonus content – including stories by Ursula Vernon, Nisi Shawl, John Hornor Jacobs, and E. Catherine Tobler – for the January 2017 issue as a thank you to our readers. So far, we have raised $1,623. If you enjoy Apex Magazine and if you’d like to help us continue to grow and expand, please consider supporting us during our drive which is running until November 15th.

Individual issues are also available direct from Apex, or through Weightless Books and Amazon.

STAY CRAZY is available now!

By Lesley Conner
on August 17, 2016

Stay Crazy by Erica L. Satifka has officially released and is available now in both trade paperback and eBook formats direct from Apex or through our many online retailers!

Stay Crazy is not your typical science fiction novel. It touches sci-fi, with an alien voice speaking to Emmeline Kalberg through the RFID chips in products at Savertown USA, but the story is more than that. Struggling to get her life back on track after a psychotic break in college, Em doesn’t want to be the hero. She doesn’t like her coworkers, her family, or even herself all that much. When she begins hearing a voice coming from a box of chicken nuggets, her first reaction isn’t to immediately rush in and help. Rather, the incident leaves her questioning herself, wondering if the voice is real or a symptom of her schizophrenia.

In Stay Crazy, Erica L. Satifka brings us a novel full of science fiction, family drama, and small town consumerism, with a main character who surprises even herself when she steps up to save the world.

Read the first two chapters in the latest issue of Apex Magazine.

Synopsis:

After a breakdown at college landed Emmeline Kalberg in a mental hospital, she’s struggling to get her life on track. She’s back in her hometown and everyone knows she’s crazy, but the twelve pills she takes every day keep her anxiety and paranoia in check. So when a voice that calls itself Escodex begins talking to Em from a box of frozen chicken nuggets, she’s sure that it’s real and not another hallucination. Well … pretty sure.

An evil entity is taking over the employees of Savertown USA, sucking out their energy so it can break into Escodex’s dimension. Escodex needs Em’s help to save his dimension and to keep hers from collapsing. But Em isn’t certain she wants to help Escodex. She has other things to worry about, like staying off the Savertown USA bowling team, busting her sister’s chops about her new found religion, and getting out of Clear Falls, PA.

When her coworkers start mysteriously dying, Em realizes that she may be the only one who can stop things from getting worse. Now she must convince her therapist she’s not having a relapse and keep her boss from firing her. All while getting her coworker Roger to help enact the plans Escodex conveys to her though the RFID chips in the Savertown USA products. It’s enough to make anyone Stay Crazy.
