EDITORIAL DISPOSITIONS: Meet the new ‘zine, same as the old ‘zine

Jason Sizemore

I know what most of you are thinking.

Why? Apex Digest rocked, and now you’ve gone and killed it. Cut off its legs and shoved it into the morass of the Internet.

Yeah, I know. But it’s not as brutal as you think.

One of your editors dyed her hair green to help the magazine survive. Issue 13 Cover artGREEN for god’s sakes!

Heh, yeah, that was pretty damn cool. We should have pictures up next week.

Copycat. You’re just stealing from the Fantasy Magazine/Prime Books business model. You’re an idiot and Sean Wallace is a genius.

Sean Wallace is a damn smart man. Business savvy, that one. But we’ve been doing this Apex Online business to support our books for a long time. Heck, it started out as a way to promote our annual anthologies. Now I want to take that synergy and irradiate the masses with it.

E-zines aren’t near as cool as print zines.

Believe me, people, the decision to migrate Apex Digest to digital was a tough one. I freakin’ love Apex Digest. But here’s the thing: in the long run, this is better for us all. We’re going to be paying writers more (5 cents a word). This increase means we’ll catch more of those top-tier stories we so love, thus our content should improve. Also, instead of 20 bucks for a subscription, you get the stories for free. With our RSS feeds, you’ll never miss another Apex story.

You win. Writers win. We win.

Right! Even the sad sack artists win, because we’ll be commissioning more book cover work.

Okay, fine. Whatever. What should we expect from our Apex Digest Online experience?

Ah, glad you asked!

First and foremost, expect fresh content on a weekly basis. That means fiction every week, alternating between an original work and a reprint.

Second, expect at least one new non-fiction feature per week.

Third, expect at least one interview feature per week.

Oh…I almost forgot. There’ll be intermittent editorials from me titled “Editorial Dispositions.” I plan to use these as a soapbox for whatever I feel like talking about. They could be rants, interviews, essays, or flat out lies.

I’m excited about the new way forward for Apex Publications. Join us as we venture into the next step of Global Domination!

I, for one, fully support the move to online publishing. I just hope that it’s really a step forward and not an intermediate step to throwing in the towel, as often seems to be the case. I’m hoping that I’ll be reading Apex’s offerings for years to come, and I’m kind of stoked that I’ll now be able to read the stories on my PDA.
Now if only it was made available in some kind of easily donwloadable package (e.g. pdb)…well, I might even be prepared to pay for the privilege (HINT!).

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Well… as I already expressed on your LJ site, I am very, very sad to see the paper version of APEX go away. Reading anything of great length on a computer screen is hell on my eyes - especially after sitting in front of a computer at work 8 hours a day. The last thing I want to do when I get home it to fire up the computer to try and read fiction, no matter how wonderful it may be.

Ah well… can’t win them all.

So, what happens to the rest of the money I paid out for my annual subscription? I didn’t get the full 4 issues.
