About
Apex Publications stirred to life on March 16th, 2005, with the publication of the first issue of Apex Science Fiction and Horror Digest. Twelve issues of the digest were published and featured a number of genre luminaries (Mary Robinette Kowal, MM Buckner, Cherie Priest, and more). In 2007, the company took a wide right turn and became a full-fledged independent publishing house with the formation of Apex Book Company. The digest turned into a pro-level digital ‘zine and our first book (Unwelcome Bodies by Jennifer Pelland) hit stores. At this point, Apex has produced over twenty books ranging from steampunk paranormal romance to hardcore horror and everything in between.
Apex currently publishes 8-10 titles a year and is distributed by Pathway Book Service. Our current focus has shifted to novels, though we still produce the occasional anthology and collection.

The Apex Team:
Managing Editor/Owner — Jason Sizemore
Jason Sizemore is not a fan of writing bios, so he makes up stuff to make himself sound interesting. For instance, he graduated from Transylvania University (okay, this one is true). He believes floods are the precursor to zombie infestations (again, true). And the first anthology he ever edited earned a Bram Stoker Award (all right, another fact). His latest anthology will be Dark Futures from Dark Quest Books. Jason maintains a personal website at http://www.jason-sizemore.com.
Senior Editor — Deb Taber
Deb Taber is a writer and editor lurking in the Pacific Northwest. Her fiction has appeared in Fantasy Magazine, Apex Digest and Shadowed Realms. Forthcoming work includes stories in the Art From Art anthology (Modernist Press) and the Dark Futures anthology (Dark Quest Books). By day she writes web content she doesn’t like to talk about, and by night she often dangles from catwalks and plays with electricity. She is obsessed with slugs and grows them in a marked-off ‘salt free’ zone in her backyard.
You can find out more about her at www.inkfuscate.com.
Fiction Editor (Apex Books) — Gill Ainsworth
Fiction Editor (Apex Magazine) — Catherynne M. Valente
Born in the Pacific Northwest in 1979, Catherynne M. Valente is the author of over a dozen books of fiction and poetry, including Palimpsest, the Orphan’s Tales series, and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. She is the winner of the Tiptree Award, the Andre Norton Award, the Lambda Award, the Mythopoeic Award, the Rhysling Award, and the Million Writers Award. She was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award in 2007 and 2009, and the Locus and Hugo Awards in 2010. She lives on an island off the coast of Maine with her partner, two dogs, an enormous cat, and an accordion. Find out more at http://catherynnemvalente.com
Assistant Editor — Maggie Jamison
Maggie Jamison writes in Portland, where she lives with her husband and two old, cranky cats. She has seen her work published in a variety of small venues, most recently in Fantastical Visions IV, and upcoming in the Dark Futures anthology from Dark Quest Books. She currently moonlights as the assistant editor for the pro-zine Apex Magazine. She’s been doing very well since the doctors deemed her no longer a danger to humankind and released her back into society. For more information about her and her current writing projects, or if you just want to know where she is so you can safely avoid bumping into her in a dark ally, visit her blog at maggiedot.wordpress.com.
Marketing Director/Blog Editor — MG Ellington

Justin Stewart lives in KY. with his lovely wife, Leslee and their two dogs, Shep and Zoe. He’s a graphic designer/illustrator who’s been making comics since 2002. He’s since published three minicomics, ‘PopStew Comics vol.1′, ‘The Adventures of Captain Brickbeard vol.1′ and ‘Sounds’, along with editing the webcomic portal ‘The Velvet Goat’. He’s done digital color, lettering and design work for Marvel Comics, Image Comics, Viper Comics, Graphitti Designs, Archaia Publishing and Silent Devil. He hits his drawing table everyday, however due to his long-running experience with gag webcomics, he still has an aversion to drawing legs.
Justin has been working for Apex Publications since it’s incorporation against his will.
Associate Editor — Jennifer Brozek
Jennifer Brozek is a freelance author for many RPG companies including Savage Mojo, Rogue Games, and Catalyst Game Labs. Winner of the 2010 Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Game Supplement, her contributions to RPG sourcebooks include Dragonlance, Colonial Gothic, Shadowrun, Serenity, Savage Worlds, and White Wolf SAS. She also writes the monthly gaming column Dice & Deadlines. When she is not writing her heart out, she is gallivanting around the Pacific Northwest in its wonderfully mercurial weather. Jennifer is a member of Broad Universe, SFWA and HWA. Find out more about Jennifer from her blog at http://jennifer-brozek.livejournal.com/.
Slush Editor — Martel Sardina
The only thing Martel Sardina loves more than writing fiction is reading it. Her passion for stories and storytellers have taken her on journeys to places she never dreamed she’d go. In addition to writing, Martel is a Contributing Editor for Dark Scribe Magazine, the hostess of the World Horror Convention’s Reading Café, and the co-editor of the Hell in the Heartland anthology (Dec 2007, Annihilation Press.) She spends her spare time in bookstores and libraries shilling her favorite authors’ works. Martel is a member of the Horror Writers Association. Visit her online at www.martelsardina.com.
Slush Editor — Ferrett Steinmetz
After twenty years of wandering desolate as a writer, Ferrett Steinmetz attended the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop in 2008 and was rejuvenated. Since then, he’s sold stories to Asimov’s (twice!), Beneath Ceaseless Skies, GUD, Shimmer, and Andromeda InFlight Spaceways Magazine, among others, and otherwise has a marvelous collection of very kind rejection letters. He lives in Cleveland with his wife, a well-worn copy of Rock Band (five stars, “Painkiller,” Expert), and a friendly ghost.
Should you want more of Ferrett Steinmetz, he blogs about puns, politics, and polyamory at The Watchtower of Destruction (theferrett.livejournal.com).
Slush Editor — Zakarya Anwar
A purveyor of fantasy and science fiction, Zakarya Anwar somehow still finds time to juggle two teaching jobs and study English Literature full-time. He is a graduate from the University of Central Lancashire and received a first-class degree in English Literature and Creative Writing.
Zakarya is currently in the process of writing two graphic novels and has begun work on his first full-blown novel. He has also been published in several small press venues in both the short prose and comic book formats, and is currently helping to create the not-for-profit Seven Earths e-journal for black and ethnic minority writers.
His very few and far between thoughts and musings can be found at http://zanwar.livejournal.com/.
Slush Editor — George GaluschakGeorge Galuschak is a speculative fiction writer and librarian who lives in New Jersey. He is a graduate of Viable Paradise, and his short fiction has been published in Strange Horizons.
Slush Editor — Patrick S. TomlinsonPatrick S. Tomlinson is the offspring of an ex-hippie psychologist and an ex-cowboy electrician. A lifelong sci-fi fan, Patrick decided that not being famous was taking up too much time, and started writing in hopes of changing this unfortunate state of affairs. His work has been accepted by Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, and a novel is nearing completion. Time not writing is split between a paying job, half-marathon training, maintaining a stable of Ford Mustangs, and placating his unnaturally supportive wife, Adrienne.
Patrick’s website can be found at http://www.patrickstomlinson.com/. Or, if you prefer Facebook: .
