Our readers have spoken!

Apex Publications publisher Jason Sizemore and Apex Magazine editor-in-chief Lynne M. Thomas are pleased to announce that the voting has been tallied and reviewed. After having done so, we have determine that we have two winners!

Congratulations to Alethea Kontis (“Blood from Stone”) and Katharine Duckett (“Sexagesimal”). They are our inaugural winners of the Apex Magazine Short Story Reader Poll each receiving 165 votes.

Our 2012 poll had a total of 520 (!) different voters. About 1/3rd of those who voted did so in the last 24 hours.

About our winners:

New York Times bestselling author Alethea Kontis is a princess, a goddess, a force of nature, and a mess. She’s known for screwing up the alphabet, scolding vampire hunters, turning garden gnomes into mad scientists, and making sense out of fairy tales.

Alethea is the co-author of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter Companion, and penned the AlphaOops series of picture books. Her short fiction, essays, and poetry have appeared in a myriad of anthologies and magazines. She has done multiple collaborations with Eisner winning artist J.K. Lee, including The Wonderland Alphabet and Diary of a Mad Scientist Garden Gnome. Her debut YA fairy tale novel, Enchanted, won the Gelett Burgess Children’s Book Award in 2012.

Born in Burlington, Vermont, Alethea now lives in Northern Virginia with her Fairy Godfamily. She makes the best baklava you’ve ever tasted and sleeps with a teddy bear named Charlie.

Katharine DuckettKatharine Duckett recently returned from two years of teaching English in rural Kazakhstan, which provided her with all the post-apocalyptic imagery needed to complete the dystopian zombie novel she began while studying creative writing at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. She has interned for Small Beer Press and and worked as an assistant to Swordspoint author Ellen Kushner and The Freedom Maze author Delia Sherman.
