Writing Advice: Sadly, There’s No Secret Handshake

Since this is my first regular post for Apex Publications, let me introduce myself. I’m Michael Damian Thomas, the Managing Editor of Apex Magazine. Basically that means that I’m Editor-in-Chief Lynne M. Thomas’s right-hand person (she even gave me a Hand of the King pin to solidify my status). I’m involved in almost all of her decisions for the magazine, including deciding which stories we publish. Lynne always has the final say, but she asks me for my input. It’s a wonderful job. I suppose I should have titled this blog post something like “Why I Love the Works of Jennifer Pelland,” because otherwise people might think I’m talking about the person and not the writer and her works. Or perhaps I should have gone the other way and called this blog post “Nominate Machine and ‘Sacrifice’ for the Hugo,” because by the time you’re done reading it, I hope you’ll feel that way. The winners of the 2012 Apex Magazine Short Story Reader Poll and the What Makes You Die poem contest were announced, and the 2012 Apex Magazine Cover Art of the Year Reader Poll was opened. We continue to celebrate Women in Horror month with fantastic articles by Elizabeth Massie, Russell Dickerson, and Jess Dimond.
