Dark Faith: Invocations was waiting for me in the mailbox when I got home from my holiday travels. For a few days I left it on my dining room table, staring at me, whispering, “Read me. You know you want to. Who cares that you said you wouldn’t start until the read-along event?”
When it started screaming “READ ME NOW!” I put it on the bookshelf, squished between Dark Faith and To Each Their Darkness. It’s harder to hear the mumbling when it can’t open its cover.
Sunday I get to pull Dark Faith: Invocations off the shelf and give in to its call to read. I’ll dive into “Subletting God’s Head” by Tom Piccirilli, devouring it quickly to satisfy my cravings and then going back over it at a more leisurely pace to be sure I didn’t miss anything.
Monday morning I’ll kick off the Dark Faith: Invocations read-along event on Goodreads by starting a discussion thread with my thoughts on the story. Then every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from now till the beginning of March, I’ll start a discussion about another story. I’ve spoken with a lot of people who have said that they’ll stop by from time to time to join the conversation, people like: Jason Sizemore, Janet Harriett, and the book’s editors, Maurice Broaddus and Jerry Gordon. Many of the authors have said that they’ll also pop by to see what everyone thinks of their story and to chime in occasionally. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
If that wasn’t cool enough, a lot of the authors have also written short devotional posts that I’ll be posting on the Apex blog the day we start discussing their story. You’ll be able to read the author’s own words about what their story is about and how it ties into the concept of faith, and then join other readers on Goodreads to discuss your own reactions. It’s like the ultimate immersion into the stories and it thrills the English major geek in me to no end.
