Appalachian Undead: Where did it all go?

I’ve been asked by a couple people about Appalachian Undead, the themed zombie anthology that was released back in November from Apex. It isn’t for sale any longer.

As you might recall, I was originally listed as co-editor on the anthology. Then I withdrew my name leaving Eugene Johnson listed as the sole editor.

The book came out. Reviewers loved it. Fearnet called it one of the best horror releases of 2012. But, in a first for me, the relationship between editor and publisher (and former co-editor) became too acrimonious. Sadly, the only option remaining was to end the business relationship and cancel the book.

In February, Apex will be publishing a reprint zombie anthology containing nearly all the stories, the intro by S.G. Brown,  and Rebekah McKendry’s essay that originally appeared in Appalachian Undead. I’m going to have a couple of surprise additions to the table of contents, as well. We will also use the same wicked cover art by Cort Skinner.

So, for those of you who got a copy of Appalachian Undead before it was cancelled… you might want to hold on to it. You got yourself a very limited run collectible! For those who had hoped to read Appalachian Undead but missed it, you will have an opportunity to correct that in February!

  1. Hey I really wanted to read Appalachian Undead…the contributor list was pretty awesome :)
Please let me know when you release the new and improved version. Love the zombie genre. It is my favorite thing to write as of late.
    THanks so much!

    • Hi Ellen,

The plan is to reissue the stories in a new anthology tentatively titled TZF: Mountain Dead. Should happen in mid-February.
